And the PhD Makes Three

It Started in a Bookstore…

Several years ago a friend and I were discussing graduate school. I mentioned some funny titles I came across while browsing variations on How to Survive Your Terrible Decision to Go Back to School and noted that they tended to be geared toward the sciences. His wife was in the women’s studies department of the same university where my husband was completing his PhD.

“You know what book would be great?” he asked with a grin. “How to survive your spouse’s decision to go to graduate school. It may be hard work for them, but it is really difficult for those of us on the sidelines.”

He was right. I had been a graduate student. Despite how intimately I knew that job (and it is a job), I found myself falling prey to many of the infuriating misconceptions I had heard from well-meaning but ignorant (in this area) friends and family. This section grew out of many conversations with that bookstore friend, several graduate students, and the people that love them. Want to know more?
